TL;DR: Falastina offers three henna cone shades, and the right one depends on how long you want it and the look you are after. Brown is pure henna: it starts orange, deepens over a day, and lasts around two weeks, so it suits weddings and longer wear. Cherry Red and Black blend henna with other natural plant dyes, stain more directly, and last four to five days. None are PPD-based "black henna." Patch test first, whichever shade you pick.
Choosing your henna colour is really a choice about two things: how long you want the design to stay and how deep you want the tone. Our three handcrafted cones each behave a little differently, and once you understand why, the decision becomes easy. This guide walks through Brown, Cherry Red, and Black, what each one does, and when to reach for it.
The short answer: match the shade to the occasion
If you are planning around a date, longevity decides for you. Brown lasts the longest at around two weeks, so it is the natural pick for a wedding, Eid, or any time you want the design to live on your skin for a while. Cherry Red and Black last four to five days, which is perfect for a party, a photoshoot, or simply trying a colour without a long commitment.
Tone is the second half of the choice. Brown gives a warm, classic henna look. Cherry Red leans into a richer, redder depth. Black is the boldest and highest-contrast of the three.
Brown: pure henna, the longest wear
Brown is pure henna, made from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. Pure henna only ever stains in shades of orange through reddish-brown, and it always develops over time. That is why Brown starts out a pale orange the moment you remove the paste and deepens to a rich reddish-brown over the first twenty-four hours.
Do not judge a Brown stain too early. The orange is part of the process, not a sign anything went wrong. With good aftercare it lasts around two weeks. If you want the deepest possible result, our guide on making your henna darker and last longer covers the contact time and sealing that get you there.
Cherry Red: a richer, redder depth
Cherry Red reaches its warmer, redder tone because henna is blended with other natural, plant-based dyes. That blend is also why it stains more directly than pure Brown, showing closer to its final colour soon after you remove the paste rather than developing slowly over a day. It lasts four to five days.
Reach for Cherry Red when you want more colour and contrast than Brown gives, on a shorter timeline. It is a favourite for festive looks where you want the design to read boldly in photos.
Black: the boldest shade
Black is the deepest and highest-contrast of the three. It reaches that depth the traditional way, by blending henna with other natural plant dyes such as indigo, which is how henna artists have darkened stains for generations. Like Cherry Red, it stains more directly and lasts four to five days.
One important distinction before you buy any black cone: Falastina's Black is not the same as the chemical "black henna" sold in some markets. That product is mixed with a hair-dye additive called PPD (paraphenylenediamine), which can cause chemical burns and lasting skin reactions. We do not use PPD. Our Black is a natural henna-and-plant-dye cone, freshly prepared like our other shades. The honest rule of thumb: a natural cone stains gradually and works with the skin, while a paste promising a jet-black result in an hour from a chemical additive is the kind to avoid.
How do the three shades compare?
Here is the quick comparison most people want:
- Brown: pure henna, starts orange and darkens over 24 hours, lasts around two weeks. Best for longer wear and traditional looks.
- Cherry Red: henna plus natural plant dyes, stains more directly, lasts four to five days. Best for richer colour on a shorter timeline.
- Black: henna plus natural plant dyes including indigo, stains more directly, lasts four to five days. Best for bold, high-contrast designs.
Whatever you choose, the application is the same. Our walkthrough on how to apply a henna cone covers the technique that works across all three shades.
A word on skin and safety
Natural henna is generally well tolerated, but skin varies, and even natural plant dyes can be a lot for some people. Whichever shade you choose, do a small patch test on a discreet area before your first full application and see how your skin responds over a day. This is general guidance, not medical advice; if a reaction concerns you, speak with a qualified professional.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between brown, cherry red, and black henna?
Brown is pure henna: it starts orange, darkens over a day, and lasts about two weeks. Cherry Red and Black blend henna with other natural plant dyes, so they stain more directly and last four to five days. Cherry Red is a richer red; Black is the boldest, deepest shade.
Which henna colour lasts the longest?
Brown lasts the longest, around two weeks, because it is pure henna and keeps developing in the skin. Cherry Red and Black last about four to five days.
Is Falastina's Black the same as "black henna"?
No. Chemical "black henna" contains PPD, a hair-dye additive that can burn skin. Falastina's Black is a natural cone that blends henna with plant dyes such as indigo. We do not use PPD.
Which shade should I choose for a wedding?
Brown, in most cases. It lasts around two weeks, so the design stays beautiful through the celebration and the days after. If you want bolder colour for photos on the day itself, Cherry Red or Black are worth considering for their depth.
